Description:
In the third decade of the 21st century, when applying the newest methodological paradigms, a need arises to research the Baltic languages and dialects at the phonetic and phonological levels: the variance of relevant and nonrelevant units of sound, acoustic and articulatory phenomena, and the processes informing the tendencies and perspectives of observed changes.
Studies at the sonic level of language remain significant from both a fundamental–typological and an applied–prognostic perspective. The research of sound systems helps to illuminate the universal aspects of language typology, identify sonic units in the flow of language, and evaluate possible sound changes in the future—all of this is also important when applying the capabilities of information technologies to perform linguistic studies, creating language recognition programs, and improving synthesized language along with other speech technologies.
Suggested topics for presentation and discussion:
- The present relationship between Baltic languages and dialects; comparative studies: theoretical, methodological and applied aspects.
- Instrumental and experimental studies of vocalism, consonantism, and prosody: the newest branches and methods.
- Sound recognition and language synthesis technologies: possibilities, innovations and perspectives.
- Analysis of digital resources at the sonic level of language, their diversity.
- The effect of extralinguistic and paralinguistic phenomena on the evolution of sound systems in Baltic languages.
